The Telegraph, Independent and the online edition of the Guardian all report on comments made yesterday to his cabinet by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in advance of his meeting today with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Rome. Netanyahu and Kerry will discuss various draft United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions with one Palestinian-backed version to demand an Israeli West Bank withdrawal within two years. Netanyahu yesterday pledged to fight such an initiative, which he said would “lead Islamic extremists to the suburbs of Tel Aviv and to the heart of Jerusalem.” The Times also notes today’s Netanyahu-Kerry meeting.

The Independent online reports that Hamas held a public display of strength yesterday in the Gaza Strip to mark the 27th anniversary of the organisation’s founding. Around 2,000 Hamas fighters marched through the streets alongside heavy weaponry including weapons, vowing to destroy “this illusion called Israel.” The Hamas parade is also mentioned in the Telegraph.

A separate report in the Independent online says that Hamas has claimed that it hacked IDF computers to reveal classified details about this summer’s Gaza conflict, Operation Protective Edge.

The Guardian online includes a review of the documentary film, “The Green Prince.” The film tells the remarkable story of the son of a prominent Hamas leader in Gaza who eventually informed on the activities of the terror organisation, helping Israel’s Shin Bet intelligence agency foil attacks. The film was widely reviewed in the print media this weekend.

In the Israeli media, political developments dominate the headlines. Both Yediot Ahronot and Maariv focus on the announcement yesterday that Shas is to split, with former leader Eli Yishai set to form his own party after failing to resolve his differences with current Shas head Aryeh Deri. Haaretz leads with the official approval given yesterday by the Labour Party of its electoral alliance with Tzipi Livni’s Hatnuah Party. Several titles review Livni’s scathing rhetoric regarding Prime Minister Netanyahu during a weekend appearance on a Channel Two satirical programme. Meanwhile, both Haaretz and Israel Hayom highlight tensions within Jewish Home, with Housing Minister Uri Ariel and party leader Naftali Bennett in disagreement over the number of slots Ariel’s faction will receive on the party’s list of candidates.

On the diplomatic front, Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom report that the Palestinian Authority intends for Jordan to submit a draft resolution this week to the UN Security Council mandating an Israeli West Bank withdrawal. Israel Radio news reports that Prime Minister Netanyahu will meet today with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Rome to discuss the Palestinian initiative.

Meanwhile, Yediot Ahronot says that Hamas has claimed that its military leader Mohammed Deif is still alive. It was rumoured that Deif, who has not been seen in public for many years, was killed during Operation Protective Edge during the summer.
