The latest violent attacks are widely reported in what the Times calls a “serious escalation” in the unrest in Israel and Palestinian territories over the weekend. In particular, the Times, Telegraph and the online edition of the Financial Times highlight an attempted car bomb attack yesterday by a female Palestinian near Ma’aleh Adumim in the West Bank. The Telegraph, Guardian, Sun and Metro all report that rockets were fired from Gaza into southern Israel over the weekend, prompting an Israeli air strike yesterday in response, targeting Hamas compounds but which killed a pregnant Palestinian woman and her child. The Telegraph also covers a combined vehicle and stabbing attack near the northern Israeli city of Hadera which injured four Israelis. The Times reports that Hamas declared an “intifada” in light of the recent violence, which it says has become a “liability” for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Independent and Independent i both include a feature on one of the recent Palestinian attackers, 16-year-old Ishaq Badran, who was shot dead after stabbing Israelis in Jerusalem’s Old City. The article explains that Israel regards him as a terrorist but Palestinians view him as a martyr. The article highlights that Badran had no record of extremism but appeared to be especially enraged over alleged Israeli ambitions and actions at the Temple Mount.

The Guardian includes an op-ed by imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, who is serving five life sentences for orchestrating terror attacks against Israelis. Barghouti claims that the “root causes” of the current violence is “the denial of Palestinian freedom” and calls for a withdrawal to the pre-1967 borders and the return of Palestinian refugees.

The Independent i, Metro and the online edition of the Guardian all report that Iran announced it has tested its first precision-guided ballistic missile, which has the range to potentially reach Israel. The Guardian online also notes that Iran’s parliament yesterday approved a bill permitting the country’s government to implement July’s nuclear deal.

In Syria, the Times online says that President Assad’s forces, aided by Russian air support, have made their first territorial gains against rebels for months.

In the Israeli media, the latest violence continues to dominate the headlines. Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom lead with the attack outside a shopping centre near Hadera, which saw an Arab from Umm-el-Fahm drive his vehicle into shoppers before getting out and stabbing others. Four Israelis were injured, including one seriously. Meanwhile, Yediot Ahronot leads with the increasingly prominent role of Palestinian women in the violence, especially in light of the failed car bomb attack yesterday, which was launched by a woman. Yediot Ahronot’s military affairs correspondent Yossi Yehoshua argues that this attack may signal a new phase from lone attacks to more sophisticated incidents, saying that a car bomb is “no longer the work of a lone terrorist.”

Israel Radio news notes that another rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip last night, but failed to reach its target in southern Israel. Several Gaza rockets were fired over the weekend, including one which was intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system above Ashkelon. The incidents prompted Israel’s air force to launch strikes against Hamas targets in Gaza.

Yediot Ahronot, Maariv and Israel Hayom report that Nazareth’s Arab Mayor yesterday dramatically heckled the leader of the Joint Arab List, Ayman Odeh MK, as he was interviewed in the city on Channel Two television. The mayor drove up beside Odeh and accused him of being responsible for the current violence, running his city and Arab-Jewish coexistence.

Israel Radio news also notes that the Knesset will this afternoon begin its winter session with speeches from the president, prime minister, leader of the opposition and others. High on the legislative agenda is approval of the state budget.
