Telit Communications shares plunge after CEO flees

The FT, Times, and the Telegraph all report on the arrest of Benny Steinmetz, an Israeli billionaire with interests in iron ore and diamond mines, on charges of money laundering. Other suspects in the case include David Granot, the chairman of the Israeli telecoms company Bezeq.

The Times reports that Jordan has refused to allow Israel’s ambassador to return to Amman unless Israel prosecutes the security guard, Ziv Moyal, who shot dead two Jordanians after being attacked by an assailant wielding a screwdriver.

The Guardian and the i report on the dismissal of Israeli company Telit Communications CEO Oozi Cats yesterday after it emerged he had been lying to the firm about his identity for over a decade. Cats is in fact Uzi Katz and is on the run from the US, having been named a “fugitive defendant” by a Boston court in relation to a property scam in the 1990s. Telit has lost over half its share price over the past week after news of Katz’s true identity broke.

All of the Israeli media feature the story of a bridge collapsing on Route 4 which killed one person last night. The media also report that the arrest of Benny Steinmetz on suspicion of money laundering.

Maariv and Haaretz continue to report on the tension between the US and North Korea, with Haaretz quoting the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff saying that the US is preparing a military option.

Maariv reports on what it calls “Likud internal wars,” along with Likud announcing that online registration for the party has been blocked. MK Nava Boker argues that “the ‘new Likudniks’ are a malicious plot of the left wing. They want to influence from inside and bring down the right-wing government… they have to be kicked out of the Likud”.    The new Likudniks countered that “we are not a fifth column. We want to restore the Likud’s values. A model society, integrity, war on corruption, the rule of law”.

Haaretz reports that an Israeli delegation has been sent to Cairo to hold talks about reopening the embassy and improving Israeli Embassy security after diplomats were evacuated last December because of  threats of a terrorist attack against staff.

Israel Hayom features a front page headline that Ehud Barak is holding talks with Avi Gabbay on returning to the Labor Party. Barak tweeted a denial of the story.

KAN Radio reports that Sheikh Raed Salah, the leader of the Islamic Movement’s northern chapter, was arrested early this morning in a police raid on his home in Umm el-Fahm. He is suspected of inciting violence and terrorism, and being active in an unlawful association.

The Times of Israel reports that Israel is to send medicine, clean water and blankets to Sierra Leone after a devastating landslide. The Prime Minister’s Office announced that Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered the Foreign Ministry to extend aid to Sierra Leone as soon as possible.
