“The night Hosni Mubarak resigned as president of Egypt, celebratory gunfire rang out in the Hizbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut.

Mr Mubarak was seen as an ally of the US and Israel, the militant Shia group’s chief foes, and as having helped to propagate anti-Shia sentiment in the Arab world. Moreover, Egyptian security forces imprisoned a member of Hizbollah last year, claiming that the man was a leader of a terrorist cell inside the country.

Hizbollah officials have barely been able to contain their glee at their old enemy’s downfall. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader, has congratulated the Egyptian people on overthrowing Mr Mubarak and noted that ‘those who have linked their fate to the US are the ones who have lost.'”
