“It is just over six months since President Ben Ali fled Tunisia as the crowds massed in the streets. Only ten days later some 50,000 Egyptian protesters took over Tahrir Square and stayed there, brave and defiant, until President Mubarak was forced out of office. The speed and scale of these first mass uprisings in the Arab world for a generation convinced the world that it was witnessing a revolution on the scale of 1989, a convulsion as significant as the overthrow of communism.”
