The latest revelations surrounding Israel’s ‘Prisoner X,’ Australian-born Ben Zygier, continues to make headlines in this morning’s dailies. A gag order on the case in Israel was partially lifted this week, following an Australian television report, claiming that Zygier, who it is thought worked for Mossad, Israel’s intelligence service, was imprisoned in top-secret in a high-security prison in 2010 and subsequently killed himself that same year. The Guardian, Evening Standard, Independent, Times, Independent i and online edition of the Telegraph all report comments made by Zygier’s lawyer who told Israel’s Channel Ten that Zygier was accused of “grave crimes” which he denied, but that he was considering a plea bargain and showed no sign that he would soon kill himself when they met the day before his death. The Independent also includes a feature on Mossad, reviewing some of its suspected past activities and modes of operation.

Meanwhile, the online edition of the Independent reports that inspectors from the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have returned from their visit to Iran without having made any progress in their attempts to inspect Iranian nuclear sites. No date was set for further talks with an anonymous IAEA official quoted saying “Iran has not negotiated in good faith.”

The Times, Telegraph, Evening Standard and the online edition of the Guardian report Iran has admitted that a general from the country’s Revolutionary Guards was killed in Syria. Although the details of how he died are unclear, it is thought that General Hassan Shateri, an officer of the elite Qods Force was instrumental in aiding Hezbollah in Lebanon. Some Syrian opposition forces have taken credit for Shateri’s death with Iranian authorities blaming “the agents and supporters of the Zionist regime.”

In the Israeli media, the ‘Prisoner X’ case continues to be covered prominently with headlines repeating international media speculation over the nature of Ben Zygier’s alleged crime. Yediot Ahronot and Israel Hayom report suggestions in Australia that Zygier was poised to reveal details of Mossad’s use of foreign passports in its operations. Meanwhile, Maariv cites legal officials who say that Zygier had agreed to be jailed under a false identity to protect himself and his family. Israel Radio News reports that charges of negligence may be brought over the circumstances which led to Zygier’s sucide.

In other news, Maariv says that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett that he wants his party to become the first coalition member but that Jewish Home figures have told Netanyahu that he will have to omit ultra-Orthodox parties if he wishes to form a government. Meanwhile, Israel Radio News claims that Likud-Beitenu has constructed a non-official team tasked with breaking the apparent pact between Jewish Home and Yesh Atid under which they appear to be coordinating a joint coalition negotiating strategy. Israel Radio News also says Egyptian media is reporting that an Israeli security delegation arrived in Cairo yesterday for brief talks on strengthening the border between the two countries and the security situation in the adjacent Sinai Peninsular.
