Most dailies cover clashes which took place yesterday in East Jerusalem between residents and Israeli police, following the murder of a local teenage Palestinian boy in what many suspect was a revenge attack for the recent murder of three Israeli teenagers. The unrest and increasing tension is reported by the Telegraph, Times, Guardian, Independent, Daily Express, Independent i, Evening Standard, Metro and in the online edition of the Financial Times. Many include condemnation by Israeli leaders of the Palestinian youth’s killing, especially a denunciation by the uncle of one of the Israeli teens killed, who said “there is no difference between blood and blood, murder is murder.”

The Independent includes an eyewitness account of the violence yesterday in Jerusalem from a local Palestinian resident. Writing in the Telegraph, Chris Doyle bemoans the “cycle of violence and hatred” between Israel and the Palestinians, which continues to damage prospects of peace.

The Guardian online says that hundreds of African migrants in Israeli detention have launched a hunger strike in protest at their continued incarceration. There are an estimated 53,000 African migrants in Israel, many claiming asylum although the vast majority are waiting for their status to be determined.

The Guardian reports that academic and author Noam Chomsky has said that the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel is in danger of backfiring over misleading comparisons between Israel and apartheid-era South Africa.

Meanwhile, the Financial Times covers the resumption of talks yesterday between Iranian officials and representatives of the P5+1 powers (US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany) in an attempt to broker a long-term agreement over Tehran’s nuclear programme. The report says that there are few expectations of a breakthrough. The Telegraph online covers comments made by US Secretary of State John Kerry, who warned that Iran must show greater flexibility and willing.

The Times and the online edition of the Guardian report that former-Prime Minister Tony Blair has agreed to give strategic advice, especially on the economy, to Egypt’s new President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi. Writing in the Guardian, Seamus Milne says that Blair should consequently be removed as the Quartet’s Middle East representative.

The Telegraph online says that the final shipment of declared chemical weapons handed over to international inspectors by the Syrian government has reached port in Italy, from where they will be neutralised at sea. Media reports have suggested that Syria’s President Assad still has access to undeclared chemical stockpiles and has also made use of crude chlorine weapons.

In the Israeli media, the overwhelming top story is the murder of a Palestinian teenager from East Jerusalem and subsequent clashes throughout the day between local residents and Israeli police. Israel Radio news reports that incidents continued sporadically throughout the night. The violence and tension is the top story in Yediot Ahronot, Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom, which highlights an investigation by Israeli authorities into online incitement by Israeli extremists. Yediot Ahronot also focuses on comments made by the parents of one of the three Israeli teenagers recently murdered, who condemned yesterday’s killing.

Commenting on the situation, Yediot Ahronot’s Ben-Dror Yemini writes that “The Jewish majority hopes and prays that Jews did not murder the teenager from Shuafat… But there is a fear, only a fear that we are living in denial.” Meanwhile, Nadav Eyal suggests on the Channel Ten website that there is a leadership failure, saying “In emotionally fraught times, a steady and confident hand is required at the helm. It is hardly a great feat for the leader to whip the masses up into a frenzy.”

Israel Hayom highlights continuing tension in the Gaza region, as rockets from the Gaza Strip continued to be fired at southern Israel yesterday, one hitting a block of flats in Sderot, although no injuries were reported. Israel Radio news says that Israel’s Air Force struck 15 targets in Gaza last night in response.
