There is widespread coverage this morning of six arrests made yesterday by Israeli authorities in connection with the murder last week of 16-year-old Palestinian Mohammed Abu Khedir in East Jerusalem. Although the exact identities of those arrested remain under a gag order, it is reported in the Israeli media and by the Times, Telegraph, Guardian, Daily Express, Financial Times, Sun, Independent i, Metro, Independent, Daily Mail and City AM that Israeli authorities described the suspects as Jewish Israeli extremists, who are thought to have carried out the murder as an act of revenge for the murder of three Israeli teenagers whose bodies were discovered last week.

The Independent online reports that Israeli forces arrested a Palestinian man in Hebron over the weekend, who is wanted in connection with the murder of the three Israeli teenagers, Eyal Yifrah, 19, Gilad Shaer, 16 and Naftali Frenkel, 16.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror, Independent i and Guardian online also include separate reports on the arrest and apparent beating by Israeli Border Police of a 15-year-old cousin of Abu Khedir during a riot in East Jerusalem on Friday. The incident was captured on camera and the youth, an American citizen was eventually sentenced to several days house arrest for his part in the riot. The US State Department said it was “profoundly troubled” by reports of the beating, which was also condemned by several Israeli leaders.

The Telegraph also reports it was announced yesterday that an Arab Israeli taxi driver was arrested in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Shelly Dadon in northern Israel in May, in what is also thought to have been a nationalistically motivated crime.

Elsewhere in the region, the Guardian online reports that Egypt’s new President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said yesterday that he wishes the three Al Jazeera journalists recently sentenced to jail terms had been deported. He said that their imprisonment, condemned by Western governments, had a negative impact on Egypt’s image. The Financial Times online reports that al-Sisi this weekend imposed a sharp rise in energy prices, which the Guardian online says sparked protests by Cairo taxi drivers.

The Times online says that former-Prime Minister Tony Blair has called on Iraqi leader Nouri al-Maliki to form a unity government or step down in the wake of ISIS’ military gains. The online editions of the Telegraph and Times report that ISIS has destroyed a dozen Shia mosques and shrines in Western Iraq. The Financial Times online suggests that an Iranian elite pilot may have been killed in action over Iraq. The Telegraph online highlights the disappearance of two teenage sisters from Manchester, who are thought to have joined ISIS.

In the Israeli media, the arrest of six suspects over the killing of Mohammed Abu Khedir is the top item. Yediot Ahronot’s headline is “Brutality on our midst” while Israel Hayom leads with “The murder and the shame.” The story is also the top item in Haaretz. Writing a joint item in Yediot Ahronot, President Shimon Peres and his successor Reuven Rivlin say “In the State of Israel there is no difference between blood and blood… The murder of a young man or woman, a Jew or an Arab, is an act that cannot be accepted.”

There is plenty of commentary on the revelation that six Israeli Jewish extremists have been arrested for the murder. In Israel Hayom, Sima Kadmon says there is deep sorrow over the recent murder of three Israeli teenagers, but “For the murder of Mohammed [Abu Khedir], there is shame.  Immense shame and disgrace over the fact that such a thing happened amongst us.”

Israel Radio news reports that unrest following the murder of Abu Khedir continued in Israeli Arab communities last night, with disturbances in Jerusalem, northern and southern communities. Dozens of arrests were reportedly made.

Israel Hayom also emphasises that Gaza rocket fire continued to escalate in southern Israel over the weekend. Israel Radio news reports that seven Hamas activists were killed in Israel Air Force strikes in response last night.
