The Metro this morning reports that Likud leader, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was yesterday granted a two-week extension to form a coalition, by President Reuven Rivlin. Netanyahu now has until 7 May to present a new government, with talks between Likud and Kulanu, Shas and United Torah Judaism thought to have made significant progress.

The Telegraph covers an interview by Prime Minister David Cameron in The Atlantic, in which he said that Israel is facing an “insidious, creeping attempt” to undermine it.

The Guardian online includes a cultural guide to the Palestinian city of Ramallah in the West Bank, describing it as the “epicentre of Palestinian nightlife.”

The Independent and the online editions of the Times and Telegraph report that the United States has dispatched the USS Theodore Roosevelt to the Gulf in response to Iran sending arms shipments to Houthi rebels in Yemen. The US already has a fleet of seven vessels in the region. The White House yesterday described the Iranian armament as “destabilizing.”

In Iran itself, the Times online says that Sunni extremists in the south of the country have kidnapped 18 Iranian special forces troops, in what it describes as part of the growing proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The online editions of the Guardian and Independent report on the latest development in the case against Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian, who was arrested in Iran in July and has been detained ever since without charge. However, his lawyer yesterday learned that Rezaian is to be charged with espionage and 3 additional major offences.

In the Israeli media, the front pages are dominated by coverage ahead of Remembrance Day which begins this evening with a one-minute siren which will bring the country to a standstill. The front page headline in Israel Hayom simply says “With thanks to them,” while a similar top story in Maariv is headlined “With grief and pride.” Most dailies include several pages previewing the memorial events this evening and tomorrow, while also telling some of the personal stories of the fallen.

Meanwhile, Israel Radio news says that progress was made yesterday in coalition talks between Prime Minister Netanyahu and Kulanu head Moshe Kahlon, who are expected to meet again today. However, Haaretz says that disagreement remains over bills ostensibly supported by Netanyahu’s Likud Party, which would allow the Knesset to by-pass some Supreme Court rulings and hand the legislature greater power in the selection of Supreme Court justices.

Both Yediot Ahronot and Haaretz cover a stabbing incident yesterday in Herzliya, in which a 27-year old Arab employee of the municipality was knifed by a local man. The victim sustained just light injuries to his shoulder while the attacker was swiftly apprehended and confessed to carrying out the attack due to nationalistic motivations.
