The Independent i covers a knife attack at the entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City yesterday, in which a Palestinian stabbed an Israeli border policeman before being shot. Both were seriously wounded in the incident, which comes just two days after an Israeli hiker was shot dead at point blank range in the West Bank. The Financial Times and Metro both report that France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on a visit to the region yesterday, in an attempt to canvas support for a French motion at the United Nations (UN) Security Council mandating a return to peace talks.

The Independent i and the online edition of the Telegraph both cover Egypt’s appointment of an ambassador to Israel for the first time since 2012, signifying warming ties between the two countries. The Times includes a feature on Egypt’s continuing almost complete closure of the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip, due to fears of Hamas terror activity, and the closure’s impact on Gazan residents. The article notes that Israel’s Erez border crossing has in comparison facilitated much greater movement during the past several months. Meanwhile, Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid writes in the Times, urging the British sense of fair play to trump the British tendency to support the underdog when it comes to judging Hamas’ actions and Israel’s response.

The Telegraph, Guardian and Independent i all cover reports that an Israeli air strike targeted an Israeli drone which had crashed in the Balbeck region of Lebanon, in order to prevent enemies from studying and using the technology. There has been no comment from Israeli officials on the reports.

The Independent and Independent i both say that Israel’s Foreign Ministry has withdrawn a cartoon clip it produced last week which lampooned the international media coverage of last summer’s Gaza conflict, following criticism from the Foreign Press Association in Israel.

The Times, Guardian and the online editions of the Telegraph, Financial Times and Independent all cover a controversial tweet sent yesterday by the wife of Israel’s Interior Minister Silvan Shalom, who was recently appointed to head Israel’s delegation in any future peace talks with the Palestinians. Judy Mozes Nir Shalom, herself a prominent Israeli media personality, tweeted a joke about US President Barack Obama, deemed offensive by many, but quickly withdrew the tweet and apologised.

The Independent i and the online edition of the Guardian both report that Iran’s parliament yesterday overwhelmingly voted in favour of a bill designed to tie the hands of Iran’s negotiators over the nuclear deal currently under discussion. If approved by the country’s higher political echelon, the legislation would mandate limits on inspections and immediate sanctions relief. Meanwhile, the Financial Times says that Western companies, especially hoteliers, are already eyeing a boom in post-deal Iranian tourism.

In the Israeli media, the top story in Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom, also covered prominently in Yediot Ahronot, is the stabbing yesterday of an Israeli border policeman at the entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City. The officer’s bravery is highlighted by Israel Hayom, after he shot the assailant having been knifed in the neck. The NRG website says that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon decided to roll back some of the measures the government had taken recently to ease Palestinian movement, as a message to Palestinian leaders and the public that terror attacks carry a price.

Both Yediot Ahronot and Israel Hayom report prominently that Arab Joint List MK Bassel Ghattas is set to join the latest flotilla from abroad which will attempt to reach the Gaza Strip despite Israeli naval restrictions, which were put in place to prevent Hamas’ import of weapons and dangerous materials.

In Maariv, Ben Caspit says that there is discord in Kulanu, with senior MKs Yoav Galant and Eli Alaluf disappointed at party leader, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon’s limited impact so far. Meanwhile, Kahlon finds himself at odds with another prominent MK Michael Oren, who last week sharply criticised US President Obama.
