The Daily Telegraph reports that Iranian parliamentarians signed a draft bill, which threatens to blockade the Strait of Hormuz to EU-bound vessels after an EU oil embargo went into effect on Sunday. The Daily Telegraph also reports that two Iranians have been arrested in Kenya in connection with a plot to bomb Israeli, British, American or Saudi targets. Daily Mail columnist Richard Littlejohn asks why the BBC insists on referring to Hezbollah and other Islamic terrorists as militants but feel it fair to refer to former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir as annex-terrorist. The Independent reports on the Israeli Border Police opening an investigation yesterday following a video showing a soldier kicking a Palestinian boy. The Independent also includes an AP story covering the funeral of former Israeli Prime Minister Shamir. BBC and the Daily Telegraph note that according to Human Rights Watch, torture is a widely used by the Syrian regime. The Financial Times reports on the violent escalation in Syria as “attack helicopters strafe Damascus suburb”.

Today’s Israeli media is dominated by political reporting following the Prime Minister’s decision to disband the committee to rewrite the law regarding ultra orthodox induction into the army. All the papers lead on this and the angry response by Kadima. Yediot Ahronot and Maariv focus on the schism between Kadima chair Shaul Mofaz and PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Yediot Ahronot also includes an article that suggests the Prime Minister has colluded with the Ultra orthodox parties in a secret deal. In other news, Haaretz focuses on the arrest of two Iranian agents in Kenya, thought to planning attacks on Israeli targets. Yediot Ahronot gives prominent coverage to the funeral of former prime minister Yitzhak Shamir. Israel Hayom announces that US Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney will visit Israel over the summer. Maariv and Israel Hayom cover the ongoing trial of former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as he comes up against a former colleague turned state witness. The Jerusalem Post reports on the P5+1 technical talks in Istanbul over Iran’s nuclear programme. The paper claims Israel has very low expectations that the talks will lead to a substantial breakthrough.
