The Independent reports this morning that a legal opinion presented to European governments argues that there is no legal obstacle to ban trade with Israeli settlements. Metro London includes a double spread on Yasser Arafat and the investigation into his alleged poisoning. The Daily Telegraph and the Times briefly note Prime Minister Netanyahu’s decision to support plans to integrate the ultra-Orthodox and Israeli-Arabs in military or civilian service. BBC continues its focus on Syria, today they announce UN envoy Annan is ready to hold talks with Assad. The Financial Times reports on the new Egyptian President’s decision to reconvene parliament after it was dissolved by the military leadership last month. The Independent includes an AP story arguing Israel’s plans to bring in the last of Ethiopia’s Jews over the next two years.

On Saturday, most coverage is focused on the elections in Libya. The London Evening Standard reports on the effort to allow reformed Palestinian terrorist into the UK. Mohamed Abu Muailek is due to speak at the premier of a film depicting his friendship with an Israeli man and his move away from terror and subsequent arrest by Hamas. The Times Saturday Review includes a spread on conductor Daniel Barenboim bringing an orchestra of Arab-Israeli youth to play Beethoven at the Proms. The Observer includes a large profile of Qatar’s ability to “flex its diplomatic, cultural and military muscles”. The Sunday Times News Review looks back at Iran’s military exercise on Tuesday and the test-firing of missiles with a range of 850 miles, capable of hitting Israel. The same review also notes the possibility of Yasser Arafat’s body being exhumed to ascertain if he was poisoned.

Today’s Israeli media focuses on efforts to redraft Israel’s military service law. Maariv focuses on efforts of the PM to calm the ultra-Orthodox parties and keep them in the coalition. Haaretz leads on the marathon talks to be held between MK Yochanan Plesner of Kadima and Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon of Likud in an effort to complete draft legislation in the next two days. Yediot Ahronot looks at all the pitfalls and contradictory priorities of all the different coalition partners. Maariv also highlights the position of Arab and ultra-Orthodox youth, with examples from both sectors that do not wish to participate in any type of service. Haaretz reports that PM Netanyahu is said to be willing to release security prisoners to secure a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Yediot Ahronot discusses Abbas’s decision to travel to Tehran later in the summer. Israel Hayom notes that US President Barack Obama has invited Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to visit Washington.
