In the UK media today, the BBC reports that US President Barack Obama said that the use of chemical weapons by Syria would change his calculations on US military action in the conflict. The Independent reports that Egypt is preparing to use aircraft and tanks in Sinai for the first time since the 1973 war with Israel in its offensive against militants in the border area, security sources have said. According to the Times, Israeli sources say Syria has provided Hezbollah with several Scud missiles that are now in Lebanon, in a worrying escalation and threat to Israel. The BBC also notes that the US authorities seized $150m (£95m) allegedly linked to money laundering by Hezbollah. The Guardian runs a comment piece condemning the attitude toward dissenting Jews.

Maariv reports that Israel has told Egypt that it must remove its tanks from the Sinai Peninsula because their continued presence is against the peace agreement between the two countries. The Jerusalem Post, meanwhile, reports that Israeli officials refused to comment Monday on whether Jerusalem gave Egyptian authorities a green light to introduce tanks and aircraft into Sinai to fight terrorists there, or whether Cairo was unilaterally moving forces there in contravention of the 1979 Israel-Egypt peace treaty. Ynet and the Jerusalem Post note President Obama’s threat that the US will consider a Syrian use of chemical weapons as a breach of its ‘red lines’. Haaretz reports that a senior Iranian official told the country’s state-run TV station Press TV on Monday that an Israeli attack on Iran will lead to Israel’s “annihilation.” The Jerusalem Post and Haaretz also report that the state will allow several of the evacuated buildings in the West Bank settlement of Migron to remain standing, due to claims made by residents that they had recently bought the lots on which the homes are built. The High Court of Justice last month ordered the state to evacuate the illegal outpost and dismantle them by August. Haaretz also reports that Israel’s security forces recently uncovered a Palestinian terror cell suspected of plotting to attack Israeli troops guarding checkpoints, as well as allegedly planning to abduct soldiers or settlers. The Jerusalem Post also notes that a Lebanese bank is suspected of involvement in money laundering for Hezbollah.
