Abbas willing to meet Prime Minister Netanyahu at any time in Washington

The BBC reports that Palestinian officials have expressed anger over Israel’s refusal to talk to hunger striking prisoners, threatening a “new intifada” if any of the Palestinians die.

The Sun and Daily Mirror report on a statement by an Israeli military official claiming that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has up to three tons of chemical weapons stored in Syria.

All the Israeli media focus on the heated exchanges at the Knesset’s State Audit Committee hearing to debate the state comptroller’s report on Operation Protective Edge. Prime Minister Netanyahu answered questions from the Committee and faced angry outbursts from bereaved parents of soldiers killed in the operation. The most heated exchanges occurred when Likud MKs David Bitan and Miki Zohar shouted at the bereaved parents who were critical of the Prime Minister’s handling of the war. Yediot Ahronot call it a disgrace, as such treatment of bereaved families is considered unacceptable.

 Haaretz reports that Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmud Abbas said in an interview with a Japanese newspaper that he is willing to meet Prime Minister Netanyahu at any time in Washington under President Trump auspices. The White House confirmed that Abbas will visit on 3 May.

Maariv reports that the High Court of Justice has upheld a Tel Aviv municipality bylaw that will allow more than hundred grocery stores and kiosks to open on Saturday.

Israel Hayom sees the ruling as a resumption of the ‘Sabbath Wars,’ as Ultra-orthodox parties are incensed by the decision.

Maariv report on the IDF intelligence estimate that the Syrian army has only a few tons of chemical weapons left in its arsenal. The IDF assessment is that it does not have hundreds of tons, as was recently claimed in several reports in the international and Arabic language media.

Yediot Ahronot notes that Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman will attend a conference in Moscow next week that will also include Iranians and other Arab states which have no diplomatic ties with Israel.  The report also notes the Americans are expected to boycott the event.

 Israel Radio includes an IDF assessment that Iran continues to send Hamas more than $60m per year and that most of the money is invested in rebuilding military capabilities instead of civilian aid.

Channel 2 News reveals that the police are seeking to question Jewish Home MK Nissan Slomiansky on suspicion of sexual harassment. The police reportedly asked Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit to allow MK Slomiansky to be questioned under caution.

Yediot Ahronot notes that singer Nisrin Kadri, an Israeli Arab Muslim, will perform at Memorial and Independence Day ceremonies with a “message of peace”.
