Bodies of Temple Mount attackers to be returned to families today

[ssba]

The FT, Times, Guardian, and the i all report on the decision by the Israeli government to remove the metal detectors from the Temple Mount. However, the Waqf have called for a continuation of the boycott on entering the site, and worshipers are still choosing to pray outside the entrance to the Temple Mount compound.

Yediot Ahronot quotes Director of the Shin Bet, Nadav Argaman who says that “the decision to remove metal detectors is good for security”.  Haaretz notes that despite the removal of the detectors, the Waqf are still preventing prayers.  Maariv reflects the right wing view which they assess is furious about the removal and sees it as a “capitulation to terrorism”.  In a rare move, Israel Hayom prominently runs commentary that suggests “removal of metal detectors is a display of Netanyahu’s helplessness”.

Yediot Ahronot reports that following the embrace by Prime Minister Netanyahu, the security guard who was attacked in Amman and killed two Jordanians will be questioned by police as is protocol in these instances.

Meanwhile Maariv reports that “officials in the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office and the Jordanian Foreign Ministry vehemently denied that there had been any deal in which the Israeli security guard was permitted to leave Jordan in exchange for Israeli consent to remove the metal detectors at the entrances to the Temple Mount.”

Yediot Ahronot and Haaretz both focus on approximately 100 settlers who have taken over a property in Bet Hamachpela near the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron.  According to the Yediot Ahronot, they are protesting the delay in the examination of their purchase documents, and say that they are the legal owners. Large IDF and Border Police forces have arrived at the spot, isolated the area and are prepared for every scenario.

Maariv continues to follow the submarine affair which includes the involvement of Netanyahu’s lawyer David Shimron who is accused of corruption.  This morning Shimron declares “I’ll emerge clean”.

Kan radio news reports that following a decision last night by the High Court of Justice, the bodies of the three terrorists from Umm el-Fahm, who committed the attack on the Temple Mount and killed two police officers, will be handed over to their families today for burial.
