The i reports that a Palestinian man who attempted to stab Israeli soldiers at a West Bank checkpoint yesterday was shot dead by troops at the scene. The man apparently exited his car at the Hawara checkpoint near Nablus and ran at soldiers brandishing a knife. The incident followed a similar attempt by a Palestinian woman to stab soldiers at the Qalandiya checkpoint last week. She was shot in the leg and wounded. Since October, a wave of Palestinian attacks has claimed at least 40 lives.

The Sun and Daily Mirror report that Israeli researchers are developing an insulin pill for diabetics, which is currently in advanced phase three trials. Dr Roy Eldor of the Tel Aviv Medical Centre is quoted saying that such a development is “the holy grail of diabetes research”.

Meanwhile, the Telegraph online reports that Syrian rebel forces are launching an offensive aimed at breaking the al-Assad government’s siege of Aleppo. The United Nations says that around 300,000 people are trapped in Aleppo with dwindling supplies. Writing in the Guardian online, Natalie Nougayrede argues that Western indifference towards the plight of Aleppo will not only encourage al-Assad, but it will also serve to fuel Sunni anger and potentially boost recruitment for ISIS.

In the Israeli media, the top story in Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom, also covered prominently by Yediot Ahronot, is a heated cabinet meeting yesterday over the controversial postponement of the launch of a new public broadcasting corporation. Broadcasting had been expected to begin in October, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is also the communications minister, said that the corporation was not ready to be launched for at least another year. The corporation itself denied that it was unprepared, leading to allegations that Netanyahu was attempting to exert control over the media. Yesterday’s cabinet vote postponed the launch until April. However, Likud’s Culture Minister Miri Regev and other ministers including Jewish Home’s Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked are said to have exchanged sharp words, after Regev asked: “What good is the public broadcasting corporation if we don’t control it?”

Writing in Maariv, Ben Caspit accuses Netanyahu and his supporters of attempting to “sabotage” and “blow up” the new broadcasting corporation.

Another major item in Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom is yesterday’s Labour Party convention, during which party head and opposition leader Isaac Herzog saw his proposal approved to delay a leadership primary for another year. His rivals, MKs Shelly Yachimovich and Erel Margalit were pushing for a contest in four months time. Israel Radio news says that Herzog described the vote as a show of confidence in his leadership. However, as Haaretz and Maariv highlight, Herzog was booed and heckled by vociferous sections of the convention.

Meanwhile, Israel Radio news reports that an Arab Israeli citizen was stopped yesterday in his car whilst travelling in the West Bank. He was found to be in possession of six pipe bombs. The explosive devices were removed and the driver was taken in for questioning.
