The Guardian and Daily Telegraph today note Israeli aid to Turkey following the earthquake. The Independent has a piece noting Syria’s lurch toward civil war. The paper also speaks to Fadwa Barghouti, wife of Fatah-Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti who is currently in an Israeli jail serving several life sentences for acts of terrorism. The Times notes Egyptian fears that the military will seek to preserve its rule in the country. Reuters and the Independent note meetings between the Quartet and Israeli and Palestinian representatives. Reuters also notes an additional 20 deaths in Syria as the regime fights an uprising against it, and a meeting between President Assad and Arab ministers. The Guardian has an article by a writer seeking to clarify an earlier article she wrote in which she maintained that Israelis regard themselves as ‘chosen.’ The paper also runs a piece on the ‘Freedom Theatre’ in the Jenin refugee camp, whose Israeli director was recently murdered by Palestinians who objected to his activities and presence in the camp. BBC Online profiles the daughter of a Japanese Red Army activist and a Palestinian ‘freedom fighter.’ The article refers to the 1972 attack at Lod airport, incorrectly maintaining that the victims of the attack were killed in ‘crossfire’ between the terrorists and Israeli security forces (they were in fact killed after being deliberately targeted by the terrorists.) BBC Online also has a piece on Druze families ‘divided’ by the border fence currently being constructed on the Golan Heights. The Daily Mail, Sun, and Daily Telegraph note that Arab-Israeli Islamist preacher Raed Salah could be expelled from the UK within days after a court ruled he had no right to be in Britain. The Times runs a piece on the arms race between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The print editions of Israel Hayom, the Jerusalem Post and Haaretz all have stories on the release of Ilan Grapel, the American-Israeli scheduled to be released from captivity in Egypt today. Haaretz has an additional item on Hamas’s increasing arsenal of anti-aircraft missiles smuggled from Libya.

In the Israeli media, all papers note Grad attacks on the Ashdod area. The Jerusalem Post reports Israeli retaliation this morning. Haaretz notes that Hamas is increasing its anti-aircraft capacity using Libyan missiles smuggled into Gaza. The paper also notes PA rejection of direct talks unless Israel agrees to a new settlement freeze and the ‘1967 borders’ as a term of reference. Ynetnews, the Jerusalem Post and Israel Hayom all note Israeli aid to Turkey. Maariv quotes Abdullah King of Jordan a saying that Netanyahu is not interested in a two state solution to the conflict with the Palestinians.
