IDF unimpressed by Iranian missile fire in eastern Syria

The Financial Times reports that Israel is resisting US pressure to ease its control of the Palestinian economy. It notes that whilst White House Senior Adviser Jared Kushner and US Special Envoy Jason Greenblatt visit Israel this week in the hope of restarting the peace process, the Israeli government has so far offered less significant economic gestures than the White House has requested.

The Times and Daily Telegraph report that Israel has reduced electricity supplies to the Gaza Strip to two hours a day, following the Palestinian Authority’s refusal to foot the bill for electricity to Gaza. The Daily telegraph expresses concern over the possible collapse of vital services.

The Times reports on the risk of the US and its allies drifting into an unplanned war with the Syrian regime, Russia and Iran, following the US downing of a Syrian air force jet on Sunday.

Yediot Ahronoth leads with angry exchanges between ministers and settlers over the construction plans for Qalqilya. Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman attacked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for saying that he did “not remember” the security cabinet decision on the subject, whilst Jewish Home leaders said that the plan “promotes a Palestinian takeover of Judea and Samaria” and that it was a “prize for terror”. Haaretz reports that the actual number of homes due to be built in the city is 5,000 rather than 14,000 as was claimed by settlers who opposed it.

Maariv reports that IDF officials were unimpressed by the Iranian missile fire at ISIS targets in eastern Syria. Yossi Melman writes that “evidently the Iranian reports – and not for the first time – were exaggerated, not to say false” saying that some of the seven missiles did not even reach Syria. Alex Fishman in Yediot Ahronoth writes in a similar vein, arguing it was an operational failure for Iran and the defence industries failed abysmally.

Maariv reports that the Jewish Home is promoting a bill for rebuilding the settlements that were demolished in the northern West Bank during the disengagement in 2005. ‎The bill was sponsored by Jewish Home Faction Chairwoman Shuli Mualem-Refaeli, along with Coalition Chairman MK David Bitan of Likud.

Haaretz, Yediot Ahronoth and Maariv all report on a shelved Likud election campaign that depicted Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog as a woman.

Haaretz also reports on more frequent meetings between rebels in Syria and the IDF.
