Israel arrests senior Hamas operative in West Bank

The i and The Times report on the story that Hamas has closed Gaza’s border with Israel following the death of senior militant Mazen Fuqaha, found dead in his Gaza home after having been shot four times. The Times notes that thousands of Palestinians turned out for Fuqaha’s funeral on Sunday. Hamas leaders blame Israel for his death.

The Telegraph also covers the story, reporting that the Hamas Interior Ministry spokesman Iyad al-Bozum has said the Erez crossing point will be “fully closed in both directions” until further notice.

The Telegraph notes an oral question to the House of Lords on the impact of back to back transfers between ambulances at checkpoints on the health of Palestinians seeking emergency care in East Jerusalem hospitals.

All the Israeli media report on the coalition crisis which appears to have worsened despite efforts by the Ultra-Orthodox parties to force Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon to reach a compromise over the Public Broadcasting Corporation. Yediot Ahronoth reports that the Haredi parties are furious at Netanyahu and said that he was threatening to topple the right-wing government himself. Haaretz reports that Netanyahu and Kahlon met twice on Sunday with no results, and claim that early elections are still possible.

Yediot Ahronoth’s military affairs correspondent, Yossi Yehoshua reports that Israel is planning to accelerate the construction of a barrier – part above-ground and part underground – along the length of its 65 kilometer border with the Gaza Strip this summer. According to Yehoshua, its completion will provide a “complete solution that prevents infiltration through tunnels”.

Maariv reports that Israel has arrested a senior Hamas operative in the West Bank as well as 13 other wanted men, four of whom belong to Hamas.

Haaretz and Yisrael Hayom feature a report in Le Monde that claims that Mossad took steps to recruit double agents in France seven years ago when officials from the two agencies were working on collecting information about Syria’s chemical weapons program.
