Israel, Germany agree submarine deal

The Guardian online reports that the UK, France and Germany have failed to secure unanimous support at a meeting of European Union leaders for sanctions against Russia in light of Moscow’s continuing military action in Syria.

In a separate report, the Guardian online also says that in advance of international talks last week in Lausanne over curbing the violence in Syria, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammed Zarif requested from US Secretary of State John Kerry that Egypt should also attend the summit. The article says that Zarif’s call “sparked concerns that Cairo is being wooed away from its traditional pro-Western stance”.

The Times reports that Iran has stepped up arms supplies to Houthi rebels in Yemen, in a move which has apparently alarmed the United States. An anonymous Iranian diplomat is quoted suggesting that the increase in weaponry is designed to “preserve” Tehran’s “upper hand” over Saudi Arabia.

The Guardian says that Israeli archaeologists believe that they have found the site where the future-Roman Emperor Titus breached the walls of ancient Jerusalem in AD 70, which led to the destruction of the Second Jewish Temple.

The Sun reports that Israeli scientists at the Weizmann Institute for Science have carried out a study which indicates that the effects of jetlag could be reduced by reducing the levels of oxygen in aeroplane cabins.

The Times includes a review of Israeli actress Gal Gadot’s new film, “Keeping up with the Joneses”.

In the Israeli media, the top story in Israel Hayom, which is also covered prominently in Maariv and Yediot Ahronot, is the announcement yesterday by the Shin Bet security agency that it has prevented a major terror attack in the southern city of Beer Sheva. A four-man cell, taking orders from Islamic Jihad in Gaza, was arrested. The men had planned to throw grenades and use firearms at a major wedding venue and also to kidnap and murder a soldier.

Maariv and Yediot Ahronot report that a couple from the northern Arab town of Sakhnin have been arrested upon re-entering the country, having returned from joining ISIS in Iraq. The couple apparently travelled to Iraq with their three children via Romania, Turkey and Syria. The husband was trained and fought for ISIS, but the family eventually turned back due to tough living conditions

Yediot Ahronot covers the story of a 16-year-old Palestinian killed yesterday in the West Bank near Hebron, after throwing stones at Israeli soldiers. The report says that soldiers opened fire at a group of stone throwers. The IDF has launched an investigation into the incident.

The top story in Maariv is a report that Israel has agreed to purchase three Dolphin-class submarines from Germany, with a memorandum of understanding to be signed in early November. The deal will enable Israel to replace three older models during the next decade. However, critics say that the deal has been hastily agreed and that Israel is paying an excessive price for the submarines.
