BBC Radio 4’s Today programme interviewed Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat this morning to discuss how civilians should respond to a terrorist attack. Barkat suggested that where possible people should engage and fight back against terrorists to put them on the defensive and reduce casualties.

The Daily Mail reports that Israel yesterday inaugurated a joint missile-defence base with the US in an undisclosed location in Israel. The base will be the first joint facility with the US in Israeli history.

The Daily Express reports that the Iran nuclear deal faces a “stern test” this week as European powers attempt to persuade US President Donald Trump to maintain the deal, while Israel is lobbying him to either cancel or renegotiate the deal.

The Daily Mail also covers Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the fringe of the UN Assembly in New York for public talks. The two leaders discussed “ways to resume the peace process and establish a Palestinian state,” the official statement said.

BBC News Online reports that Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has formally demanded the suspension of next week’s referendum on Kurdish independence. The Iraqi Supreme Court has also ruled that the poll must be postponed until questions over its legality can be addressed. Despite global opposition, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has continued to back the 25 September vote. The Times also covers the story, reporting that both Turkey and Iran have threatened Iraq’s Kurds with military hostilities and a blockade  if the KRG goes ahead with the referendum.

Maariv reports that Netanyahu was focused on Iran, while Trump talked about peace. Israel Hayom leads with Netanyahu’s statement that amending the nuclear agreement is a clear American interest, while Haaretz reports comments by Netanyahu that Trump wants to amend the Nuclear Agreement as well as highlighting the Israeli premier’s first public meeting with Egyptian President al-Sisi.

In other news, Kan Radio reports that a senior Palestinian source assessed that no political breakthrough was likely in tomorrow’s meeting between Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas and Trump. The two are scheduled to meet prior to Abbas’s speech at the UN General Assembly.  The report adds that two of Abbas’s close advisers were seen speaking at length with Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai at the conference of PA donor states in New York.

Maariv reports on discussions at the special committee preparing the nationality bill for its first reading. Kulanu Faction Chairman Roy Folkman said that his personal position was that the word “equality” should be added to the bill adding that he hoped “such a fundamental basic law should be passed by broad consensus and not by a narrow, momentary and political majority”. Former justice and foreign minister MK Tzipi Livni, of the Zionist Union, called to “adopt one sentence that was submitted as a bill by me and by MK Benny Begin (of Likud), which says that a Jewish and democratic state is the nation-state of the Jewish people with equal rights for all its citizens”.

Maariv reports on testimony provided by Channel Ten buyer Len Blavatnik, which strengthens suspicions that Netanyahu took a bribe and was involved behind the scenes in the sale of the TV Channel.

The Jerusalem Post reports that Hamas has called on the PA to lift sanctions against it in Gaza. Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said on Monday that Abbas “must undertake urgent action to abrogate all the punitive decisions and measures against the people of the Strip”.
