The Guardian online reports that three Israeli soldiers were wounded yesterday in a shooting attack in the West Bank. The attacker was reported to have been a member of the Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces. The report says that Hamas praised the attack as “heroic”. The shooting occurred one day after three Border Police officers were injured in a vehicle attack by a Palestinian in the West Bank.

The Independent reports comments by Jewish Home leader and Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who called for Israel to annex parts of the West Bank if the UN  Security Council passes a resolution condemning Israeli settlement construction. The report says that Bennett’s comments coincide with a campaign by the settlement movement for a bill to annex the West Bank city of Ma’aleh Adumim, just east of Jerusalem.

The i and Independent  report that an Israeli ministerial committee has backed legislation that will automatically block online pornography unless the user directly contacts the provider. The bill appears to have support from parties across the political spectrum.

The Guardian online covers the resignation of high-profile Israeli journalist and author Ari Shavit from his positions at Haaretz and Channel Ten, after two women in the US accused him of sexual harassment during a book tour. Shavit said that he was “ashamed” of his “mistakes”.

The Times, Telegraph, Guardian and the online edition of the Financial Times report on the election of Lebanon’s new President Michel Aoun, ending a 29-month power vacuum. All reports emphasise that Aoun is fully backed by Hezbollah. The Guardian says that Aoun’s election “politically legitimises Hezbollah,” while the Telegraph says that it “represents a success for Hezbollah and its allies in Iran and Syria”.

The Telegraph reports that an offensive by opposition forces against government troops in Aleppo has killed dozens of civilians.

In the Israeli media, the top story in Haaretz, which is also covered prominently by Maariv and Israel Hayom is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at yesterday’s opening of the Knesset’s winter session, in which he said he will “rehabilitate” the Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA). The IBA is being wound down to make way for a new public broadcaster, set to launch  in January. Netanyahu is reported to be spearheading an effort to reverse the process. He is thought to fear that the new body will be critical of his government. Yediot Ahronot reports  on determined opposition to Netanyahu’s plan by Finance Minister and Kulanu head Moshe Kahlon.

The lead item in Maariv, which is also a major story in Yediot Ahronot, Haaretz and Israel Hayom is a shooting at a West Bank checkpoint yesterday where three Israeli soldiers were injured, one seriously. The attacker, who was a member of the PA security forces, was shot dead at the scene by soldiers.

Israel Radio news this morning reports that the state has submitted a request to the High Court to delay the evacuation of the West Bank outpost of Amona by seven months. The Court ruled that the outpost is illegally built on private Palestinian land and must be removed by 25 December. The court judgement is strongly opposed by Jewish Home MKs and many Likud MKs. The state made clear in its request that it is not asking for an extension with a view to keeping Amona in place, but rather to make adequate arrangements for relocating its residents.
