The Telegraph and the Daily Mail both report that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son, Yair, posted an antisemitic cartoon on his personal Facebook page. The Daily Mail reports the debate about the expansion of a settlement in East Jerusalem. The Nof Zion settlement is located within the Palestinian neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber. Jerusalem’s City Council deferred its decision on the granting of construction permits by three days on Sunday. The Council declined to give a reason for the deferment but it has been claimed it is due to a scheduling issue concerning a lawyer for opponents of the scheme. If building permits for the expansion are approved then 176 housing units will be added to the 91 that are already in place.

BBC News Online reports comments by the President of Iraqi Kurdistan Massoud Barzani, who said that the region will draw the borders of a future Kurdish state if Baghdad does not accept a vote for independence in a referendum due later this month. The Iraqi government in Baghdad has denounced the referendum as unconstitutional and may reject a pro-independence result. To complicate matters further, Barzani also warned that the Kurds would fight any group that attempted to alter the “reality” of the situation in Kirkuk by force. While the oil-rich city of Kirkuk is claimed as part of the territory directly administered by the central Iraqi government, Kurdish forces captured that city as part of their offensive against ISIS. The Kurds now claim Kirkuk and the region around it as part of their self-governing republic within Iraq. If the referendum returns a pro-independence vote, the Kurds would seek to absorb Kirkuk into Kurdistan. This is an outcome that could potentially be violently contested by the Shi’a dominated central government, and several Shi’a militia have already stated they will use force to keep Kirkuk as part of Iraq.
