Tensions increase between Israel and Lebanon over Mediterranean Sea dispute

The Financial Times reports that an Israeli attempt to establish sovereignty over a disputed area of the Mediterranean Sea has angered Lebanon. Speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri responded: “If [Israel] continues with its expansionist plot through the government and the Knesset, that means that the spark of war is looming on the horizon.”

The Daily Mirror, Daily Mail and Metro report that Ramirez Sanchez – also known as Carlos the Jackal – has been given a third life sentence for a terrorist attack carried out in Paris in 1974. Ramirez has prior association with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and is already serving a life sentences for an attack committed on behalf of the Palestinian cause. Ramirez said at the start of his trial: “No one in the Palestinian Resistance has executed more people than I have.”

The Times reports how Ultra-Orthodox Jews have taken to demonstrating in the streets of Jerusalem in protest against compulsory military service.

The Telegraph reports that Hamas has ordered a lockdown in Gaza while it searches for the killers of Mazen Fuqaha. Hamas believes its senior military commander was killed by Israel.

The Telegraph also reports that Israel has told its citizens in Sharm el-Sheikh and Egypt’s other Red Sea resorts to leave immediately, warning of the imminent threat of an ISIS attack on tourists in the area.

The Times reports that high crime, inflation and low job prospects in Caracas, Venezuela are leading many Jews to leave the country. The story notes that it also difficult for Jews to find kosher products: “Our meat is twice the price of standard cuts, and the traditional bread – if you can get it –is very poor quality.”

The Israeli media reports on a demonstration by thousands of Ultra-Orthodox in Jerusalem last night to protest the arrest of yeshiva students who refused to report to the draft office to receive their exemptions from IDF service.

The Jerusalem Post reports an exclusive that US is planning an Israeli-PA-Gulf summit in the summer. According to the report, Israel would have to agree and adhere to an informal unspoken freeze on future housing construction outside of the established settlement blocs as a precondition for the conference.

Maariv notes a call by Shas leader Aryeh Deri for the Zionist Union to join the Netanyahu led government. In response, Zionist Union Isaac Herzog called on Deri to form an alternative government together with him. Yediot Ahronot reports on a poll suggesting that the Jewish Home party would gain more seats in an election if Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked replaced current leader Naftali Bennett. The poll was commissioned by Jewish Home activists.

Haaretz and Yediot Ahronot report that Israel and Nicaragua will renew diplomatic ties, seven years after they were suspended by the Managua government because of the Mavi Marmara incident. A joint statement said that Israel and Nicaragua viewed positively the renewed ties in order to promote joint activity for the benefit of both peoples and help in the fight for peace in the world. It also said that until 2010 the countries had maintained ties of friendship and cooperation in such various fields as agriculture, health and education.

Channel 10 reported that Palestinian security officials in Judea and Samaria have raised the state of alert due to concern that Hamas will try to carry out terror attacks against Israeli targets by means of sleeper cells. The [Israeli] security establishment is also concerned about sniper fire at IDF soldiers from the Gaza Strip.
