The Guardian have written their view on Liz Truss’s plans to move the British Embassy to Jerusalem. They say Donald Trump’s relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018 was incendiary. Widely criticised, including by the British government, it sparked protests and clashes in which Israeli security forces killed dozens of Palestinians.

The FT are reporting that the morality police are disappearing off the streets of Tehran. The white-and-green Guidance Patrol vans, used by Iran’s morality police to monitor and arrest women who defy the Islamic dress code and for the past decade a symbol of the Islamic republic’s crackdown on women, are not even visible outside the morality police centre in central Tehran.

The BBC are also reporting on Iran, saying At least 76 protesters have been killed by Iranian security forces during 11 days of unrest sparked by the death of a woman in custody. Iran Human Rights (IHR), a Norway-based organisation, accused authorities of using disproportionate force and live ammunition to suppress the dissent. State media have put the number of dead at 41, including several security personnel, and blamed “rioters”. Hundreds of people have also been arrested, 20 of them journalists.

Kan Radio reports on the continuing high state of alert in the West Bank. Shots were fired again last night at an IDF vehicle that was on routine activity in the northern West Bank. The troops returned fire and no one was injured. This morning too, there are dozens of intelligence warnings of terror attacks. Security forces continue to carry out arrests to prevent terror attacks and have increased security on roads to settlements and on the seamline.

Yediot Ahronoth and Maariv report on a suspected terror attack against a train. An object was discovered on Monday had been placed on a train track between Acre and Carmiel in what is believed to be an attempt to derail a train and cause a multi-victim disaster.  The police removed the obstacle. Shortly afterwards, a suspect was arrested, an Israeli Arab resident of Galilee in his 20s. He was taken for questioning and was released last night.  A gag order was placed on the incident and on the investigation.  “There is no question that a major terror attack was averted,” said an Israel Railways official yesterday. “A train that is traveling between 120 to 140 kilometres an hour that hits such an object could derail, and the carriages could overturn. This is something that the driver cannot prevent because they don’t have time to slow down. Shahar Ayalon, the former director of Israel Railways said that “Trains on this track carry between 800 to 1,500 passengers and a terror attack would result in mass casualties. The roads to the tracks are also not easily accessible and rescue efforts would be lengthy. We’ve never had a case of a train derailing because of a terror attack. This is a step up and it must be investigated by the GSS and the Israel Police.”

In Maariv Efraim Ganor describes the volatile situation in the West Bank as being directed by Iran, which views the West Bank as “the ideal theatre from which to take revenge against Israel, mainly to exhaust and undermine life in Israel using Hamas and Islamic Jihad… The Iranians are also trying to exploit the economic distress and the hopelessness and despair of tens of thousands of Palestinian young people, coupled with growing hatred for Israel, ostensibly because Israel allegedly ‘desecrates’ al-Aqsa Mosque, which is constantly ‘infused’ into the young people’s veins. All this has turned Judea and Samaria—which for a long time was relatively quiet—into a center for terrorism and for recruiting young people for terrorism in exchange for money… He concludes: “There is no question that a new reality is taking shape in front of us, a reality that is worrying and one that we haven’t known since the second Intifada. Therefore, just as the healthcare establishment had to deal with new variants at the height of the pandemic, so the security establishment, in all its layers, must urgently, with all its might, face this variant of terrorism, which judging by all signs, comes from Iran.”

Channel 12 news reports that the United States is due to present a detailed draft agreement on the maritime border between Israel and Lebanon in the coming days. The Israeli and Lebanese governments will then have to accept or reject the draft. The agreement will be a compromise between Lebanese and Israeli demands, a middle ground that both countries can live with. Israel is preparing for the possibility that Hezbollah will try to carry out a provocation that could destabilise the north in the days leading up to the signing. Last week, the Prime Minister’s Office sent a letter to the Lebanese prime minister saying: Israel believes it is possible and incumbent on us to reach an agreement on the maritime border between Israel and Lebanon in a way that would serve the interests of the citizens of both countries. The agreement will contribute greatly to regional stability. The Prime Minister’s Office also clarified that “producing gas at the Karish site is not dependent on negotiations. The site will begin producing gas the moment it is able to do so, without delay.” In an address, Hezbollah leader Nasrallah called on Israel not to begin producing gas from the site until negotiations have been completed: “We are monitoring the negotiations that Lebanon is conducting. Our regional eyes are focused on the Karish gas field.”

Jacky Khoury in Haaretz analyses Mahmoud Abbas’ UN speech. In a tired and frustrated speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Palestinian President Abbas offered a historical survey of Palestinian suffering and impatience and sounded like a leader who knows he has run out of time to offer any game-changing solutions.

Yedioth Ahronoth and Israel Hayom report on the demonstrations in Iran. Activists say that at least 76 protesters have been killed by Iranian security forces during 11 days of unrest sparked by the death of a woman in custody.
