Hagel: All options open with diplomatic window closing on Iran

Chuck Hagel, who has been nominated as the next US Defense Secretary told members of Congress yesterday that although serious diplomatic efforts must continue in order to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, the US military must be ready to act to prevent such an eventuality if needed.

Answering a 112-page questionnaire in advance of today’s hearing in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee, which must approve his nomination, Hagel stated “The United States should take no options off the table in our efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon,” and that “If confirmed, I will focus intently on ensuring that US military is in fact prepared for any contingency.” Hagel listed preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon as a top security challenge and ominously commented, “While there is time and space for diplomacy, backed by pressure, the window is closing.”

Hagel also indicated that he would look to further increase missile defence cooperation with Israel, saying “I am proud of the work that the United States has done in support of the ballistic missile defence of Israel and, if confirmed, I will continue to support these efforts.” He emphasised “our unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security.”

Hagel has been portrayed by opponents as soft on Iran and hostile towards Israel. Despite yesterday’s apparent assurances on both counts, he is still likely to face tough questioning from the mainly Republican lawmakers of the Senate’s Armed Forces Committee who will conduct his confirmation hearing today. Meanwhile, on Tuesday the Senate overwhelmingly approved the appointment of John Kerry as US Secretary of State with a 94-3 vote.
