Netanyahu reaffirms two-state solution alongside Obama

At a press conference following lengthy talks with US President Obama, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasised his commitment to a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian conflict based on “two states for two peoples”.

Speaking at the Prime Minister’s residence in Jerusalem, the two leaders conveyed broad agreement on a range of issues. Obama indicated that he will elaborate further on the Israel-Palestinian peace process during a public address on Thursday afternoon, but said, “A central element of a lasting peace is a strong and secure Jewish state where Israeli security needs are met alongside a sovereign and independent Palestinian state” and pledged to “look for steps” that would “build confidence” towards such an outcome.

Netanyahu responded saying, “I know there were questions regarding what the policy of the new government will be towards peace with the Palestinians. So let me be clear, Israel remains fully committed to peace and the solution of two states for two peoples… We extend our hand in friendship and peace to the Palestinian people.”

In reference to the Iranian nuclear threat, Netanyahu commented “I know you appreciate that Israel will never cede the right to defend itself to others, even its greatest friends.” Obama also addressed the issue emphasising “we prefer to resolve this diplomatically.” However, he pledged that “Our policy is to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon” and “all options are on the table” to fulfil that commitment. Obama also said that the United States shared Israel’s concerns over the prospect of Syrian chemical weapons being transferred to dangerous groups such as Hezbollah. He said the US was still checking claims that the Assad regime used chemical weapons this week in an attack on Khan al-Assal, something which he has defined in the past as a red-line for the United States.

Obama’s schedule today includes a visit to the Israel Museum, before travelling to Ramallah to meet Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas, after which he will return to Jerusalem to deliver a public address prior to a state dinner hosted by President Peres.
