Israel’s new ambassador to Egypt expected to arrive in Cairo today

Israel’s new ambassador to Egypt is set to arrive in Cairo this week after his predecessor was pulled out when the embassy was stormed by protesters in September, Egyptian and Israeli sources said on Sunday.

Yaakov Amitai, the new envoy, replaces Yitzhak Levanon, who was ambassador when the embassy was raided during protests over the killing in August of Egyptian security guards by Israeli troops pursuing a terrorist cell that had killed eight Israelis in a cross border raid.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said that Amitai is scheduled to arrive in Cairo on Monday but did not rule out any last minute changes due to the tense political situation in Egypt. Amitai, is fluent in Arabic, and previously served at the embassy in Cairo.
