Barak warns of a political tsunami if peace process does not progress

[ssba]

Defence Minister Ehud Barak said yesterday that the public is unaware of the ‘political tsunami’ about to take place, referring to the support by international organisations that recognise a Palestinian state on 1967 borders and the growing campaigns to delegitimise Israel. Barak made his comments yesterday during a speech at the International Security Studies Institute in Tel Aviv. He predicted that if a stalemate in the peace process talks continue the ‘political tsunami’ would take place by September.

The Defence Minister called for putting the core issues on the negotiating table during peace talks. “a political initiative will minimise the chances along the way. We have not tried to put all core issues on the table in the past two years. Israel must say it is ready to discuss security borders, refugees and Jerusalem and it will get a chance. If it fails, responsibility will be placed on the other side.” He also called on Kadima and opposition leader Tzipi Livni to join the coalition and said that general elections would not help Israel at this time.
