Boycott Law set to be considered by High Court

[ssba]

Israel’s High Court of Justice is set to review the new law that would make advocacy of boycotts subject to civil litigation in Israel. This follows the submitting of petitions to the High Court by a number of organisations following the passing of the law in the Knesset earlier this week. Justice Salim Joubran is considering the petition submitted by Gush Shalom yesterday and has given the state 60 days to respond. Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein will defend the new law before the High Court. Attorney Raz Nizri, a senior aide to Weinstein, said last week that the law was on shaky grounds, in terms of Israel’s Basic Laws. As a response to Nizri’s remarks, some alterations were made in the final version of the law, which was voted on by the Knesset. Coalition MKs who supported the new law, meanwhile, reacted angrily yesterday to the prospect of the High Court altering parts of it. Likud MK Yariv Levin disputed the authority of the High Court to disqualify laws enacted by the elected parliament.
