Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Elaraby confirmed yesterday that Egypt remained committed to its peace treaty with Israel, and to all international treaties to which it is a signatory. Elaraby made this statement in the course of a meeting with Foreign Ministry Director General Rafi Barak. Elaraby also noted the need for efforts to obtain ‘justice and a comprehensive peace’ between Israel and the Palestinians. Israeli officials are likely to be reassured by the Egyptian foreign minister’s words. However, concerns remain regarding future arrangements in the area of northern Sinai adjoining the Gaza Strip. There has been a notable decline in Egyptian efforts to adequately police this area since the departure of President Hosni Mubarak.
