IDF seeks to buy US equipment following Iraq withdrawal

[ssba]

The Israel Defence Ministry are in talks with the Pentagon over the idea to purchase retired US military equipment from Iraq following the US withdrawal. It is cheaper and more effective for the US to sell the equipment to other countries rather than to transport the equipment back to bases in the US and Europe. The IDF are interested in renewing its fleet of Humvee combat vehicles which are used by US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Israel is also interested in acquiring surplus weapons and ammunition.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia may also look to buy the retired equipment. Egypt already receives $1.3 billion in foreign military aid from the US and Congress was recently notified of Pentagon plans to sell the Egyptian military new Abrams tanks. It would be the first large military sale to Egypt since the revolution and ousting of former president Hosni Mubarak earlier this year.
