Labour party to hold run-off election between Yachimovich and Peretz

[ssba]

The Labour party will hold a run-off election next week Wednesday between Amir Peretz and Shelly Yachimovich after the two candidates received over 30 percent each of the vote in yesterday’s primaries. Yachimovich finished one percentage point higher than Peretz with 33 percent of the votes, while the other candidates Isaac Herzog received 25 percent and Amram Mitzna 12 percent. Mitzna conceded defeat last night and thanked his supporters, while Herzog said that he would still decide on his actions over the next few days.

A Labour party spokesperson said 65 percent of the total 66,310 eligible voters voted in the primaries yesterday, and that the vote passed without any illegalities. The winner in next Wednesday’s run-off vote will become the party’s seventh leader in less than a decade.
