Israel’s President Shimon Peres yesterday afternoon marked the 16th anniversary (according to the Hebrew calendar) of the assassination of former-prime minister Yitzhak Rabin. Peres held a ceremony at the Presidential Residence in Jerusalem. Peres said under Rabin’s leadership Israel knew how to be a strong shield, yet unwavering in its hope for peace. The president added that the majority of those who had been opposed to the Oslo Accords, and the formula of two-states for two peoples, now favored a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Oslo Accords, Peres asserted, opened up new markets for Israel, promoted international investments here and brought an end to the Arab boycott of the Jewish state. They also facilitated the peace agreement with Jordan and enabled Israeli representation in a number of Arab states, namely Qatar, Morocco, Oman and Mauritania.

A state memorial ceremony for Rabin will take place today at 3:00pm (Israel time) on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem and the Knesset will hold a special memorial session at 5:00pm.
