Small turn out for ‘million-man march’ in Jordan

[ssba]

A planned ‘million man’ march outside the Israeli embassy in Jordan failed to attract large numbers yesterday, with only a few hundred protesters participating. The Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood had announced its intention to join the march, as had an additional seven opposition groups. The demonstrators demanded the closure of the Israeli embassy in Jordan, the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and the cancellation of the 1994 peace treaty between Israel and Jordan.

Israeli embassy staff in Amman had left the building, so as to avoid similar scenes to those that took place at Israel’s embassy in Cairo, which saw Israeli personnel trapped in the embassy building, as a mob tried to storm it. In Amman, Jordanian security forces deployed in force around the empty embassy building, outnumbering the few hundred protestors and preventing a number of attempts to breakthrough security barriers.
