US Congress blocks £130 million in aid to Palestinian Authority

The Independent reported over the weekend that US Congress blocked the transfer of £130 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority, which was earmarked for 2011.
PA Senior Negotiator, Saeb Erekat said that the PA appreciates the aid given by the US, but said the financial assistance should not be used as a tool for blackmail. Erekat pointed out that after his meeting with Arab League Secretary General Nabil el-Arabym, that Arab league members would not change their stance and would continue to support the Palestinian statehood bid at the UN. Meanwhile, the Arab League on Sunday called on its members to increase contributions to the PA following reports of the US blocking £130 million.
