Netanyahu vows to deal with extremist settlers

In the UK and international press today, Reuters and the Financial Times note that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the settler extremist attacks that took place on Monday and Tuesday. The Guardian, the Telegraph, BBC Online and the Times note that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday attended the flag raising ceremony for the Palestinian flag at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The Independent, the Times and the Telegraph note that Hezbollah has revealed the identities of CIA officers working undercover in Lebanon. The Guardian and the Independent carry editorials on the crisis in Syria, and note that the UN has predicted that more than 5,000 people have been killed in protests against the regime.

On the Israeli front pages today, Yisrael Hayom leads with the response by Israeli IDF and government officials on the settler extremist attacks on military targets, and calls on the army and government to stop them. Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post also lead their front pages with developments surrounding the settler attacks and plans for the government to deal with the situation. The Jerusalem Post notes that the Mughrabi Bridge connecting the Western Wall to the Temple Mount may reopen soon following plans and discussions to rebuild and secure the bridge. The Jerusalem Post notes that PA President Mahmoud Abbas raised the Palestinian flag at the UNESCO headquarters yesterday.

In other news, Haaretz notes that Israeli intelligence officials repeatedly warned the government over the past few months that settler extremists will target IDF sites in response to plans to evacuate settlements in the West Bank. The paper reports that new Israeli ambassador to Egypt Yaakov Amitai told reporters on Monday that he was sure the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel will be preserved. The Jerusalem Post notes that a convicted Hamas bomb maker, Abdallah Barghouti, is planning to run in the next Palestinian elections, which is set to take place in May 2012.
