Israeli Foreign Ministry criticises Europeans for contradicting Quartet plan

In the UK and international press today, Reuters reports that the Israeli Foreign Ministry said yesterday that European UN Security Council members must adhere to the wording of the Quartet plan and refrain from inconsistent interpretations. The Scotsman notes that the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticised PA President Mahmoud Abbas for meeting last night with Amneh Muna, a woman who in 2001 lured a 16-year-old Israeli into Ramallah where Palestinian Militants murdered him. The Independent reports that Israel is planning to pump back water into the Jordan River. BBC Online and Reuters report that Egyptians are going to the polls in a run-off for the second phase of the parliamentary elections following days of violence. The Financial Times notes that the Egyptian uprising is turning into a media war as both sides attempt to portray their version of the story via the media with content and multimedia. All papers report on the continuing violence and deaths taking place in Syria as protesters clash against President Bashar Assad’s forces. In the latest developments, the Arab League monitors are expected to arrive in Syria today to assess the situation.

 

On the Israeli front pages today, the Jerusalem Post leads with the headline “At least 111 killed in Syria’s bloodiest day”.  Israel Hayom carries a picture of PA President Mahmoud Abbas meeting yesterday with Amneh Muna, a released Palestinian prisoner, who was responsible for luring a 16 year old Israeli into Ramallah where he was murdered. The Jerusalem Post and Israel Hayom report that Israel criticised four EU members of the UN Security Council for interfering in domestic politics. Haaretz reports that IDF officials are concerned over an increase in Hezbollah activity in southern Lebanon.

 

In other news, the Jerusalem Post and Haaretz note that the Israeli defence budget received a boost of 780 million shekels following the approval of a Treasury request yesterday. Haaretz notes that US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice urged the Security Council to double its efforts in imposing sanctions on Iran due to its nuclear development programme.
