Fatah, Hamas leaders discuss PLO reform in Cairo

In the UK and international press, the Telegraph and Guardian report that Palestinian factions made progress in reconciliation talks which would allow Hamas and other groups to join the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO). The Independent and Guardian note that Iran blocked British government websites that are aimed towards Iranian audiences. Reuters notes that Egyptian activists are calling for a mass rally today against the military rule and its handling of protesters. The Independent and Financial Times notes that Arab League monitors arrived in Syria amid a situation where more than 200 people were reported to have been killed by President Bashar Assad’s regime in the last two days. The Economist carries a piece on the Syrian situation turning from protests to an insurgency as many defect from the military.

On the Israeli front pages, the Jerusalem Post and Israel Hayom report that Hamas and other terror groups will join the PLO after an agreement was reached between Palestinian faction leaders. The papers also note that Jerusalem’s Mayor Nir Barkat is seeking support to redefine Jerusalem municipal borders that will allow the Palestinian Authority to control the Palestinian neighbourhoods outside of the security fence. Meanwhile, the papers note that the Israeli Defence Ministry cancelled a £89 million defence contract with Turkey.

Haaretz reports that the Arab League monitors have arrived in Syria to monitor the situation on the ground. The paper also notes that the Palestinian delegation to the United States welcomed EU criticism of West Bank settlements and said that the unwillingness of the US to condemn Israeli settlement construction will isolate Washington in the international arena.
