Barak: Iran embellishing nuclear gains

[ssba]

The UK and international media continues to widely follow Iran’s nuclear programme, with several papers reporting on Iranian progress in installing new fuel rods and unveiling new centrifuges for uranium enrichment. The Telegraph claims there are indications that Iran has improved ties with al- Qaeda as part of their effort to expand their terror networks. There is additional fear this could also involve a ‘spectacular attack’ inside Europe. The Independent, Guardian and the Evening Standard report that Thai sources claim the bombing attack earlier this week was an assassination attempt on an Israeli target. The papers also note the high level of alert in Israeli diplomatic missions worldwide. The Financial Times highlights the growing concern of Western governments over the possession of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime. The paper also discusses Turkey-US relations in light of recent regional developments. The Guardian has an article on the public exhibition in Tel Aviv of documents and artefacts revealed by the Mossad relating to the capture of Adolf Eichmann. The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail note the unsuccessful appeal for the BBC to make the 2005 Balen report on anti-Israel bias accessible.

Israeli media outlets also focus on the Iranian progress in their nuclear project.

In the Israeli press, Yediot Ahronot quotes Israeli officials who warn that Iran is only months away from making its nuclear facilities immune to aerial strike. Maariv meanwhile quotes Israeli officials who dismiss the latest Iranian announcements. In other news, Yediot Ahronot claims the bombs could have been made in a laboratory in Tehran and transported abroad in diplomatic mail, which according to protocol is not screened. Israel Hayom and Haaretz report on the case of the IDF doctor acquitted in France over libel charges relating to the case of Muhammad Al-Dura, a Palestinian child killed during the second intifada. Maariv reports four rockets were fired last night towards western Negev communities, though no damage was caused. Several news sources report that Israeli aircrafts targeted terror facilities in response.
