The cross border attack from the Sinai that killed an Israel-Arab defence contractor is covered in the Financial Times, Independent, and the Daily Telegraph. The Telegraph’s headline focuses on the unusual Israel’s decision to deploy two tanks on the border, apparently in breach of the Egyptian peace agreement. However the article notes the Sinai has become a “haven for militants to attack Israel” and that an “informal agreement was reached last year letting both sides increase their military presence in the area”. BBC online continues its coverage of the Egyptian presidential election and the constitution drawn up by the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF). BBC online also keeps a focus on Syria, including an analysis on the country’s chemical weapons. The Companies and Markets section of the Financial Times notes that Facebook has acquired an Israeli facial recognition technology.

Today’s Israeli media continues to concentrate on developments in the south. Yediot Ahronot tempers concerns over the newly elected Egyptian President. The paper notes that the Muslim Brotherhood’s spiritual leader Mohamad Badai will likely find a role within the Presidential Palace. However the powers of the President are being reduced due to the military leadership’s speedy introduction of the temporary constitution. There is also significant focus on the Sinai border with more pessimistic conclusions. Israel Hayom warns that the Israel-Egypt border may become a “war border”. Similarly Maariv suggests the recent pattern of attacks emanating from Sinai is a new reality the IDF must cope with: “The really bad news is that could spread to all fronts in the near future.” In other news Maariv reports on a compromise that will allow for a peaceful removal of the five building in the Ulpana Hill neighbourhood of Bet El. During talks yesterday between government officials and community representatives, there was a proposal to build high rise tower blocks elsewhere in the settlement. All papers report on vandalism against a mosque near Ramallah. The act has been strongly condemned by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel radio reports that four rockets were fired into southern Israel from Gaza this morning, though no one was injured and no damage was caused. Times of Israel reports Israel will host 2013 under-21 European football championship. Jerusalem Post reports hip-hop pioneer, Russell Simmons, is visiting Israel promoting Muslim-Jewish reconciliation.
