The UK media widely covers the ruling of an Israeli court which found no unlawful action in the accidental death of Rachel Corrie in Rafah in 2003. The Independent reports that Corrie’s family intends to appeal the verdict. The Guardian includes various news and comment pieces, including quotes from human rights organisations that see the ruling as a “dangerous precedent”. The Times includes a leader article noting, “Israel has an obligation to protect civilian lives in a combat zone, but also to defend its own citizens. The International Solidarity Movement, which organised the protest in which Corrie died, does not declare solidarity with Israeli civilians at risk from suicide terrorism. Its main activity is to endanger its own volunteers. Tragically, Corrie was a victim of that insouciance”. Similarly all outlets cover the decision of French prosecutors to open a murder inquiry into the alleged poisoning of Yasser Arafat. The Daily Telegraph reports on the promise given by Egyptian President to respect the countries historic peace treaty with Israel. The Daily Mail comments on the US’s relationship with Israel and Iran. The Guardian notes that Iranian opposition groups have appealed to UN secretary general to visit political prisoners and challenge the regime over its human rights record during his visit to Tehran for a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement this week.

The Israeli media also widely covers the court decision in the case of Rachel Corrie. Maariv notes the “long and comprehensive 162-page verdict” that the driver of the bulldozer could not have seen Corrie, and dismissed allegations about IDF negligence. In other news, Yediot Ahronot notes the pressure on the Prime Minister to lower the price of petrol. Maariv notes the Finance Ministry’s intention to cut National Insurance Institute stipends. Haaretz report on the budget discussions delayed again. Israel Hayom covers Minister Moshe Yaalon’s visit to Burgas, the scene of the recent terror attack. Yediot Ahronot speculates over a possible meeting in New York around the UN General Assembly, orchestrated by the Americans between Egyptian President Morsi and either the Israeli Prime Minister or President. Haaretz notes the Egyptian military campaign in Sinai has now come to an end.
