Abbas to meet Trump at the White House

The Financial Times and Times report that Hamas has published a policy paper that states its willingness to accept a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders. The Times notes further that the document identifies Israel as “a racist, aggressive, colonial and expansionist project,” but omits the language of its 1988 charter that spoke of a war against Jews.

The Guardian notes that Israel rejected the document before its full publication; a spokesmen for Prime Minister Netanyahu said: “Hamas is attempting to fool the world, but it will not succeed.”

The Times reports that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is meeting President Trump today at the White House.

All the Israeli media gives substantial coverage of the Independence Day celebrations. Yediot Ahronot includes dramatic pictures of two of the newly acquired F-35 flying over Hadera’s power plant.

Both Maariv and Israel Hayom call the UNESCO resolution on Jerusalem “a disgrace”.  Though the Israeli Ambassador hailed it an “enormous diplomatic achievement” as Israel’s support almost doubled to 10 countries.

Haaretz and Yediot Ahronot preview today’s meeting between President Trump and Palestinian President Abbas, suggesting Trump will look for a commitment to revive the peace process.  Abbas is also expected to meet Secretary of State Tillerson and senior members of the American Jewish community.

Maariv report on the appeal hearing in a military court of Elor Azaria who is challenging his 18-month sentence and demotion to the rank of private.

Haaretz note the participation of Ultra-orthodox politicians at official ceremonies marking Israel Independence as a new phenomenon.

Yediot Ahronot and Maariv report an apparent suicide as a young Jewish man attacked a female soldier at checkpoint with a knife.  The assailant was killed.  It later transpired he was a 19-year-old Israeli that had not been drafted into the IDF and had given a suicide note to a friend.

Israel radio report that Human Rights Watch (HRW) has condemned Hamas for detaining two Israeli citizens, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed. A special report issued by the organization stated that the two, who both have serious mental health conditions, crossed the border into the Gaza Strip because of their illness.
