UK Charity Commission to investigate student unions over BDS

The BBC reports on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s threats to stop paying Israel for electricity for Gaza. The report notes the response from Hamas that this would be “a grave escalation and act of madness”.

The BBC also reports that Israel deployed its Patriot missile defence system yesterday to shoot down “a target” believed to be a Syrian drone over the Golan Heights. The BBC World Service Radio also interviewed Maj Gen Giora Eiland on the subject, last night on Newshour.

The Times, Guardian and i reports on the explosion near Damascus airport yesterday that Syrian rebels have called an Israeli airstrike. The Times notes Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz who said to Israel Radio: “This incident is totally consistent with our policy to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah.”

The Times also reports that student unions are being investigated by the Charity Commission to establish if they are acting within the law in their support of boycott motions against Israel.

The Daily Telegraph covers also this story, quoting Chairman of Board of Deputies of British Jews Jonathon Arkush: “The Jewish community experience is that anti-Israel bigotry and agitation on campus is directly linked to a deterioration of the atmosphere to an extent where Jewish students feel personally threatened and unsafe… investigation by the charity commission into the legality of anti-Israel policies is in our view justified and long overdue.”

All the Israeli media discuss the upcoming visit by President Trump to Israel. Haaretz quotes officials who say that Israel believes Trump will not seek to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem for the time being. The Times of Israel reports that Trump refused to confirm reports that he would announce the transfer of the Embassy to Jerusalem during his a, but hinted that he may clarify the issue at that time. Ben Caspit in Ma’ariv suggests Israeli officials have been circulating what he calls a creative idea – to stop pressuring Trump on the issue of the embassy, and instead to ask for a presidential letter that will recognise Israel’s right to the Golan Heights

All the Israeli media also report that the IDF intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which was launched into Israel by Assad’s army.

Yediot Ahronoth reports that a Lebanese citizen was arrested after infiltrating Israel. The man was spotted at a bus station 10km from the border.

Haaretz reports comments to US Congress intelligence committee by Israeli Minister of Intelligence Yisrael Katz Minister in which he said the US should recognise Israeli Sovereignty on the Golan Heights and should impose sanctions to prevent permanent Iranian presence in Syria.

The Times of Israel reports that after shots were fired at Israeli troops operating on the Israeli side of the Gaza security fence an IDF tank destroyed a Hamas position in central Gaza.

Maariv reports that Naftali Bennett, the current leader of the right-wing Jewish Home party, won a sweeping victory in the party’s primaries.
