The Times reports that an Israeli soldier was stabbed and injured by a Palestinian attacker at a checkpoint near Jenin in the West Bank. In a separate report, the Times also says that Israel’s army yesterday demolished the home of the Palestinian killer who murdered 13-year-old Israeli girl Hallel Yaffa Ariel in her bed near Hebron in June. Israel carries out such demolitions as a deterrent to discourage those considering carrying out further attacks. More than 40 people have been killed since a wave of Palestinian violence began in October.

The Telegraph and Daily Mail report that the Egyptian judo competitor who refused to shake the hand of his Israeli opponent at the Olympic Games, has been reprimanded by the International Olympic Committee and sent home. Islam El-Shehaby rejected the outstretched hand of Or Sasson, who eventually won Israel’s second bronze medal of the games.

The Independent reports that The Coalition against Racism in Israel has launched a £2m lawsuit against Moti Dayan, the leader of the Lower Galilee Council, following comments he made in July over Arab citizens using swimming pools in Jewish communities. He said that “cultural differences” meant he was not in favour of such situations, but later claimed he had been “misunderstood”.

The Financial Times says that Volkswagen has finally taken a £323m stake in the Israeli taxi service app Gett, after the deal was announced in May.

The online editions of the Guardian and Telegraph report that Russia’s defence minister has claimed that talks are taking place with the US to fight together in the embattled Syrian city of Aleppo, where millions are thought to be trapped by intense fighting between the Assad regime and rebel forces. Washington has not confirmed that such talks are taking place.

In the Israeli media, the top item in Yediot Ahronot, which is also covered prominently by Maariv is the appointment of a new head of the IDF’s Naval Commando unit. The officer, who is referred to only as Colonel T, is a former-winner of a annual high-profile quiz for high school students.

A major story in Yediot Ahronot and Israel Hayom is the demolition by IDF engineers of the home of Mohammed Tarayreh, the Palestinian who murdered a 13-year-old Israeli girl earlier this summer. The demolition apparently destroyed Tarayreh’s dwelling, but did not harm the rest of the building in which other family members live. There were small-scale skirmishes between local protestors and IDF forces as the demolition took place. Meanwhile, Israel Hayom emphasises that the family of the murdered girl has said that the demolition is insufficient action to deter future attacks.

Maariv and Israel Hayom preview a meeting today of the Likud Party Secretariat, at which government minister Yisrael Katz is expected to introduce measures viewed as reducing the powers of party leader and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, a Katz supporter is quoted as saying: “This is not a putsch and not against Netanyahu… It’s not against Bibi, it’s for the Likud.”

Meanwhile, the top story in Israel Hayom, also covered prominently in Yediot Ahronot, is the enthusiastic celebratory welcome given to Israel’s two Olympics bronze medal winners, Or Sasson and Yarden Gerbi, as they arrived back at Ben-Gurion Airport from Rio De Janeiro last night.
